Do you imagine strolling into your garden and picking a luscious deep purple plum off a tree and taking a bite? Don’t think that only experienced gardeners can do this! The Czar Plum Tree is easy to grow and is self pollinating. That means it does not require another fruit tree nearby to enable it to produce fruit. Simply plant and wait for your crops to be ready for picking.
Prunus domestica 'Czar' is a hardy and tough tree that can tolerate most soil types except very chalky or badly drained areas. It is ideal for planting in the cooler northern regions or in difficult sites. It also has a high resistance to frost. This tree is very reliable and will produce heavy crops of fruit in early August.
The fruits are oval in shape and have a deep purple-blue colouring on the skin. The flesh is yellowish-green with a strong acidic flavour. As the fruits mature they become darker and sweeter. Prunus 'Czar' is the most popular of all the cooking plums. Use them for jams, jellies, plum pies and tarte tatins. These plums enhance a pork roast and are delicious when roasted with a honey drizzle.
Czar Plum Tree has its heritage in Hertfordshire in the 19th century. We offer Prunus domestica 'Czar' as a Saint Julian A, semi-vigorous rootstock. This is suitable for training into a bush, half standard or fan. The tree will reach heights of 4-5m in a 10 year period if trained as a bush.
Once you get a passion for planting your own fruit trees, you will find that the Czar Plum tree is a good pollinator for other plums trees in the area. Plant an ‘Opal’ near by, it produces a lovely contrasting red skinned fruit.
