A very popular deciduous climber, the clematis ‘Ville de Lyon’ is a beautiful shrub with highly distinctive large purple-red flowers with slightly dark petal tips. These blooms appear heavily from the middle of Summer all over the spreading, twining vines and between the rich green foliage to provide a striking, vibrant display. Clematis are perfect for fence, trellis or wall training or when used as a cascading plant on walls or overhangs.
Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soils and keep in full or partial sun. Prefers some shade as warmer Summers and direct sunlight for long periods may cause leaf scorch and fade the flowers colour. Keep the root and plant base cool and shaded.

How to Water
Water regularly throughout the first few growing seasons to keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated. Once established, clematis is relatively drought tolerant and only needs to be watered during particularly dry spells.
How to Plant
Clematis flowers best when planted in full sun or light shade in fertile, moist but well-draining soil. Prepare the soil by weeding the area thoroughly and adding plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Dig a generous hole and position the plant so the top of the root ball is around 5cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and compost, firm down gently, and water in well.
