Calliandra 'Dixie Pink' ornamental trees present large watermelon-pink, fluffy flowers which resemble giant powder puffs - this is where they get the nickname 'Powder Puff'. The blooms emerge from a white centre which adds to their characteristic appearance. Furthermore, the trees grow to be very fragrant, which will attract various bees, butterflies and other pollinating wildlife to your garden.
The foliage of the tree is just as attractive with their flushed pink, feathery leaves when emerging which turn to dark green once matured. Being a native South American plant, Calliandra trees love being out in the sun, and are best grown in full sun or partial shaded locations. Over the Winter period, it is recommended to move the tree inside to a greenhouse or conservatory.

This tree thrives with an annual feed of a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote vibrant blooms and healthy foliage. Protect young trees from strong winds with stakes until their roots are well established. If growing in a cooler climate, consider planting in a sheltered location to protect it from frost.
How to Water
Water Calliandra regularly during its first growing season to help establish a robust root system. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering every 7–10 days during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot, particularly in poorly draining soil. Early morning watering is best to minimise evaporation and provide the plant with moisture during the heat of the day.
How to Plant
To plant Calliandra, select a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, and soak the root ball in water beforehand to ensure it is hydrated. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the root collar is level with the ground, and backfill with a mix of soil and compost. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and add a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, leaving a gap around the base to prevent rot.
