Product description

Fagus sylvatica is commonly known as 'Green Beech', 'Common Beech' or 'European Beech', it is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays stunningly bright green foliage in spring before showing off wonderful copper/bronze leaves in Autumn. Fagus will often keep it's leaves all year round, giving you the benefits of a colourful dense screen hedge throughout the year.

Green Beech prefers well-drained chalky soil, however will do fine in any type of soil as long as you avoid very wet conditions. Fagus grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size.

Top Tip

Prune Fagus hedges in late summer to maintain a neat, dense shape. Young plants may benefit from a windbreak in exposed areas, especially during their first winter.

How to Water

Water Fagus regularly during its first year to help establish a strong root system, especially during dry periods. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, but occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells will benefit growth. Avoid overwatering, as waterlogged conditions can damage the roots. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and allow the plant to absorb moisture effectively.

How to Plant

For bare root Green Beech, choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant beech in moist, well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 30-50cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
