Top Tip
Prune weigela immediately after flowering to encourage new growth and maintain its shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve air circulation and promote healthy growth. For older plants, a more substantial prune can rejuvenate the shrub, stimulating vibrant blooms the following season. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to boost flowering and overall vigour, ensuring your weigela remains a standout feature in the garden.
How to Water
Water weigela deeply and regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system, especially during dry periods. Once established, it requires moderate watering, with the soil kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in cooler months, and always water at the base of the plant to prevent wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal issues. During extended dry spells, ensure it receives supplemental watering to maintain its health and flower production.
How to Plant
To plant weigela, select a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining, fertile soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball to allow roots to spread. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, then backfill gently, firming the soil around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil, and apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, leaving space around the base to prevent rot.
