Instructions
Top Tip
Prune Laurus annually in late spring or early summer to maintain its shape and encourage bushy growth. Cut back any dead or damaged branches and trim lightly to keep the tree compact. If growing as a hedge, trim more frequently to retain a neat appearance. Regular pruning also promotes new shoots and glossy foliage, ensuring the tree remains a striking feature in your garden year-round.
How to Water
Water Laurus regularly during its first growing season to encourage strong root development, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, the tree is drought-tolerant, needing only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Water deeply at the base of the tree to encourage deep root growth and avoid overhead watering, which can promote fungal issues. Use rainwater if possible, as Laurus thrives best without excessive minerals from tap water.
How to Plant
To plant Laurus, select a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Soak the root ball in water before planting, then dig a hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball. Position the tree in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill gently, firm the soil around the roots, and water thoroughly. Add a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to avoid rot. Plant in spring or autumn for best results.
