Flashes of colours, when it's felt like all you've seen is grey for months. Spring Flowering Bulbs herald a new dawn, and they're wonderful.

So we wanted to dedicate this blog to some of our favourite Spring bulbs - have a look through and pick out some of your favourites. Which ones will light up your garden next Spring?

Top Spring Flowering Bulbs to Plant in Autumn

It tends to follow that if you want early Spring flowers, you need to plant them in Autumn. This is the case for the majority of Spring bulbs - get them in the ground when there is plenty of moisture around, but before it starts to get too cold. The bulbs below will all benefit from Autumn planting.

Snowdrops

Snowdrops are a wonderfully graceful flower to have in your garden - and as particularly early spring flowers, the really are one of the first signs of Spring. With their teardrop-shaped flowers, snow-white in colour, they are a beautiful addition to any garden.

These hardy perennials should be planted between August and December, and you could find the first bloom as early as January, and certainly by March. They are also very attractive to pollinators, so you will see wildlife returning to your garden. Snowdrop bulbs are a great place to start, when planning your Spring flowers.

Crocus

Crocus flower bulbs are the perfect accompaniment to Snowdrops, as they will also early start to bloom in early Spring. You may find that by February you'll start to see the beautiful blooms of the Crocus, with their flashes of bright colour and stunning foliage.

This is an incredibly versatile Spring flower, and we stock a huge range of Crocus bulbs for you to select from - different colours, shapes and sizes. You can pick the perfect ones for your Spring flowers display next year!

Daffodils

We're getting into the real big-hitters now! Daffodils, for many people are the Spring flower, the one that no British garden can do without! In our opinion, you can't have too many daffodils in your garden - they make beautiful cut flowers to have inside or to give as gifts, and they bring such joy to people wherever they are.

There are plenty of different varieties of Daffodil bulbs to choose from, from the classic 'Golden Trumpet' to the 'Paperwhite' and the dazzling white, yellow and orange of our 'Narcissus Garden Mix'.

Tulips

Speaking of classic Spring flowers, here we have Tulips. These are the true masters of variety, with a plethora of colours shapes and sizes available, each offering something slightly different. Tulip bulbs are perfect for the creative gardener - you can plan stunning displays with a little bit of time an effort.

All you need is some well draining soil in a sunny spot - from here you can grow these beautiful flowers, combining different varieties to create your dream garden.

Irises

Another UK Springtime classic now - Irises. These ornate little flowers have been a mainstay of gardens in this country for centuries, and you can see why. Beautiful blooms, usually in a deep blue colour, but there are also purple, yellow and whites available in our Dutch Iris mix, that pop out from around March onwards.

Iris bulbs are easy to plant and grow, so they are the perfect addition to almost any garden.

Hyacinth

Another plant that comes in a wonderful array of varieties and colours is hyacinth. While they offer these lovely bold blooms, the real joy of planting hyacinth bulbs is the wonderful aroma that they give off - a strong, unmistakable scent that adds something else to you Spring garden.

These will flower in March and April, and they compliment other Spring bulbs perfectly. Make sure you include hyacinth in your Spring display!

Paeony

The Paeony flower, sometimes known as peonies, go under the radar a little when we talk about spring flowers. We assume that this is largely because they are late Spring flowers, even blooming into the Summer. They should not be overlooked, though, as these are beautiful, stylish flowers, a little like roses. They are known, in fact, as the 'Rose of the Spring', and they make amazing cut flowers.

They can be grown in beds, borders or containers - they thrive best in full sun.

Anemone

If you asked a child to draw a flower, I'd like to guess that they would draw something akin to the Anemone. They are the classic, quintessential, flower, and as such, they deserve a spot in your garden.

It helps, as well, that they have a beautiful deep colour, but there are plenty of different varieties of Anemone bulbs for you to choose from. We're sure you'll find one you love.

Allium

if you're looking for something a bit different for your Spring display, then Allium bulbs could be the perfect choice for you. They are ornamental onions - the large round heads of the flowers really stand out, helped by the stunning purple colour. They could be the decorative flower you've been looking for!

They are easy to grow, and they usually reflower without much effort on your part, so you can enjoy them year after year!
