Product description

Calathea Leopardina is a popular tropical houseplant, commonly known for their foliage which consists of strong stems of upright oval leaves that are often brightly coloured with darker "animal print" variegated patterns. As these plants come from tropical origins, they prefer temperatures of 15C or above in a well lit location, but they are not very tolerant of direct sunlight as it can damage the leaves. These plants require regular watering during spring and summer but this can be cut back in winter, allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out before watering. These plants thrive in humid conditions so they would be best placed in a steamy room like a bath/shower room, or this can be simulated by misting the leaves occassionally.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves. Collections or 'mixed' listings for plants will be selected dependant on availability and carefully hand-picked to ensure their quality.

Instructions

Top Tip

Place your Calathea in a room with consistent humidity levels, such as a bathroom, or use a pebble tray to increase moisture around the plant. Rotate the pot weekly to encourage even growth, as the leaves naturally orient toward light sources. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their vibrant patterns.

How to Water

Water Calathea consistently to keep the soil moist but not soggy. During the growing season (spring and summer), water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and reduce watering in autumn and winter. Use distilled or rainwater if possible, as Calathea is sensitive to chemicals in tap water. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, and empty the saucer after watering to prevent root rot. Mist the leaves regularly to maintain humidity, especially in dry environments.

How to Plant

To plant Calathea, select a pot with drainage holes and use a peat-based potting mix that retains moisture but drains well. Place the plant in a slightly larger pot if repotting, ensuring the roots are not too tightly packed. Avoid planting too deeply; keep the base of the stem level with the soil. Position the plant in a spot with indirect light, as direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. Ensure a warm and humid environment, as Calatheas thrive in temperatures between 18°C and 24°C.
