Product description
Lovage Common is a towering, architectural herb cultivated primarily for the intense, savoury flavour found in its large, celery-like leaves. This potent taste, which is often described as a concentrated mix of celery, parsley, and yeast extract, is released instantly when the leaves are chopped or torn. It is traditionally used as a powerful seasoning for soups, stews, and stocks—where a little goes a very long way—and the hollow stems can even be candied or used as aromatic straws for Bloody Marys.
This plant is typically grown as a giant, hardy perennial that dies back to the ground in winter before shooting up to heights of two metres or more in spring. It is extremely robust and frost-tolerant, requiring plenty of space at the back of a border. For the best results and most succulent leaves, plant it in a location with full sun or partial shade. It is not drought-tolerant and thrives in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil that is kept consistently moist through regular watering.

Garden Plant Size Guide

Plants in larger pots can be multiple years older than their smaller counterparts with more mature root systems and foliage. This makes them able to thrive as a full size plant in your garden quicker than smaller alternatives.
The most common size of pot that garden plants come in are 9cm/1L/3L/5L this is in reference to the diameter at the top of the pot.
9cm potted plants still remain the most popular cost effective option though, they just may take a little patience to allow them to grow into full maturity once planted in your garden.

Top Tip
Lovage is incredibly strong - often called the "Maggi plant" in Europe because it tastes like soup seasoning. You only need one plant for an entire family, and you should harvest the young, tender leaves from the outside of the clump to keep the texture palatable.
How to Water
Lovage is a thirsty plant with a deep taproot that requires consistent moisture to support its massive growth. Water it generously and deeply, especially during dry spells, to prevent the foliage from becoming bitter and tough.
How to Plant
Plant Lovage in rich, deep soil that has been improved with plenty of compost or manure. Give it ample room - at least 60cm of space - as it will grow into a giant specimen that can easily shade out smaller herbs nearby.
