Product description
Tithonia rotundifolia 'Torch', commonly known as Mexican Sunflower, is a striking annual that produces bold, orange-red flowers with a daisy-like appearance. These large, vibrant blooms are not only eye-catching but also attract a variety of pollinators, including butterflies and bees, making them a valuable addition to any garden focused on supporting wildlife. Tithonia Torch grows tall and bushy, reaching heights of up to 1.5 meters, providing a stunning backdrop in borders and cutting gardens.
For best results, sow Tithonia Torch seeds indoors from February to April, using a quality seed compost. Sow seeds thinly and cover lightly with soil, keeping the trays or pots in a warm location. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow on in cooler conditions until they are ready to be planted outdoors. After the risk of frost has passed, plant out the seedlings in a sunny, sheltered spot, ensuring they are spaced 45-60cm apart to allow for their spreading habit. Tithonia Torch thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun, making it ideal for brightening up sunny borders.
To maintain healthy and vibrant plants throughout the growing season, water regularly, particularly during dry spells, and provide support if necessary, as the tall stems can be prone to wind damage. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage continuous flowering from July to October, ensuring a long-lasting display. The flowers are excellent for cutting and adding to floral arrangements, bringing a splash of summer colour indoors as well as out.
