Product description

Abelia grandiflora Gold Jewel is a compact, semi-evergreen shrub with a bright and eye-catching foliage colour of gold. The shade of the colour forms in a royal nature, which then progresses into a deep copper colour as the plant ages and goes through the Winter period. As the month of June comes round, this shrub will produce pink-white, trumpet shaped flowers that will remain present until the later periods of Autumn. Abelia plants should be planted in moist, well-drained soil, as well as full sun to partial shade exposure on a regular basis. You should water it regularly - once a week will be adequate, except during periods of warmer weather.

Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Abelia lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches to keep the plant healthy and looking its best. For optimal flowering, plant it in a sunny location and feed it with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Regular care will reward you with a stunning display of blooms and vibrant foliage.

How to Water

Water Abelia deeply after planting and continue to water regularly during its first year to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant and only requires watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid waterlogging the soil, as this can damage the roots. Early morning watering is ideal, allowing the soil to absorb moisture before the heat of the day.

How to Plant

To plant Abelia, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining, fertile soil. Soak the root ball thoroughly before planting, then dig a hole twice as wide and slightly shallower than the depth of the root ball. Space plants 1–1.5 metres apart to allow for mature growth. Backfill the hole with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the stems.
