Product description

Athyrium nipponicum Metallicum, also commonly known as the Japanese Painted Fern, is a deciduous fern plant with green leaves which appear painted with silver and flushed with deep purple. The unique colours of the fern stand out against other shrubs and foliage.

The Japanese Painted Fern will grow best in moist, well-drained soil away from direct sunlight. They are excellent plants for adding year-round colour and texture to partially sunny or shady borders and rock gardens or filling in gaps between trees and shrubs.

Please Note: Images are for illustrative purposes only and designed to be a representation of the item(s) being sold. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

Direct water towards the soil rather than the fronds to help prevent root rot.

How to Water

Water thoroughly until the roots are fully established and during particularly dry spells. Athyriums prefer damp conditions so don’t let the soil dry out.

How to Plant

These shade loving ferns thrive in full shade or partial shade and grow best in soil that is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Choose a sheltered spot and dig in plenty of organic matter before positioning the plant and backfilling the soil to the same level as it was in the pot. Firm down gently and water in well.
