Product description

Chaenomeles X Superba ‘Lemon and Lime’ or simply call it the Japanese Quince, is a rounded deciduous shrub with spreading branches that are adorned with glossy dark green leaves. In spring, the shrub blooms pale yellow-green flowers creating a lush appearance in the garden.

These flowers attract bees and butterflies. This Japanese Quince is one of the early flowering plants excellent for wall-side borders.

Lemon and Lime produce adorable cup-shaped flowers in clusters. These pale lime green flowers open in spring right before the leaves appear and fade into creamy white. Glossy dark green leaves will add such a beautiful contrast to the flowers, that will definitely not go unnoticed. In autumn, the shrub is rewarded with green edible fruits that mature into yellow after long ripening.

A Japanese Quince will thrive in a moist and fertile soil that is well-drained. It prefers full sun or partial shade and will reach a height of 1.5 metres and similar spread at maturity. It is a sun-loving plan although it does well enough even in partial shade.

Lemon and Lime is such an amazing border shrub that requires low maintenance and is easy to grow. While growing it in a container, use a good quality compost. This plant is a fast grower, prune hard by removing any side-shoots after flowering to 2-3 buds to keep its shape and size in control.

Chaenomeles Lemon and Lime will ornate wall-sides, trellises or any sunny slopes. It is suitable for cottage gardens and informal gardens. Use this low maintenance shrub as a single specimen or group it to form stunning borders against walls.

Instructions

Top Tip

Despite being unpleasantly tart when raw, the fruits can be cooked and sweetened to make delicious jams and desserts.

How to Water

Water regularly during the first growing season. After this, chaenomeles is relatively drought tolerant and only needs to be watered during particularly dry spells.

How to Plant

Grow chaenomeles in moist but well-draining soil in a sunny position. While it tolerates partial shade, this plant flourishes best in full sun. Dig a hole around twice as wide as the root ball and position the plant so the top of the root ball is at soil level. Backfill with soil and compost, gently firm down, and water in well.
