Product description

Spanish Gorse is a popular variety of Genista that blooms bright pea-like yellow flowers throughout early summer. This ornamental shrub is dwarf, reaching heights smaller than 0.5 metres. It finds its application as fine edging along a driveway or for covering rock walls.

Genista Spanish Gorse originates from the hills of France and Spain. These shrubs grow arching or trailing branches covering walls or slopes, where other plants might face difficulty in thriving. Use them to cover any unpleasant location in your garden.

Spanish Gorse demands full sunlight, planted in a moderately fertile soil that is well-drained. These plants do not require regular watering, once they establish their roots they will look for moisture in the soil naturally.

These are easy to grow low maintenance shrubs, most suitable for beginner gardeners. Their leaves are tiny and hold almost no floral value. But its flowers do create a lustrous spring-summer scenic display, especially loved by bees and butterflies.

Prune Spanish Gorse after the flowering season, to allow the new buds have enough time to harden before blooming once again in next spring.

Cover sunny slopes with brilliant golden blooms in late spring and early summer, or use them as ground covers.

Instructions

Top Tip

Genista thrives in poor, well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering, as they prefer dry conditions once established.

How to Water

Water Genista moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. They are drought-tolerant once established but will need regular watering during dry spells in the first year.

How to Plant

Plant Genista in well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and position the plant, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Space them at least 60cm apart for growth.
