Product description

Globe artichokes (Cynara scolymus) are large, architectural perennial plants, which are grown for their large edible flower buds and ornamental enough for the flower garden. They can be grown from seed or young plants, are easy to cook and are delicious!

Globe artichokes are not too fussy about soil, as long as it's reasonably fertile and well drained. Transplant to their permanent position when they are large enough to handle, with at least five true leaves, allowing 60-90cm (2-3ft) between plants. Water in well. Seed-grown plants usually flower the year of sowing. To keep stock young and vigorous, divide plants every two to three years and plant at the same spacing as seeds. Keep crops weed free, mulch with well-rotted manure or similar in spring when the soil is warm and moist. Feed with general fertiliser such as Growmore or similar in spring, to increase yields. Water during dry weather. In cold areas, cover plants with a mulch of straw, compost or well-rotted manure in late autumn, to protect them during cold winter weather.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves. Collections or 'mixed' listings for plants will be selected dependant on availability and carefully hand-picked to ensure their quality.

Instructions

Top Tip

Globe artichokes are highly ornamental, so don’t limit them to the herb garden. They also make a great addition to beds and borders.

How to Water

Water regularly until full established then only during particularly dry spells.

How to Plant

Plant globe artichokes in a sheltered warm spot in full sun and free-draining soil. Leave around 90cm between plants to prevent them fighting for nutrients and to allow them to grow to their full potential. Mix plenty of well-rotted organic matter into the soil and water in well.
