Product description

A compact to medium-sized semi-evergreen shrub with a spreading growth habit. The Lavatera ‘Ruby Star’ is a variety of the popular Tree Mallow and a striking addition to Summer gardens. The dark grey-green, lobed foliage grows beneath cherry-red flowers with overlapping petals that give a subtle twisting or swirling effect. A beautiful cultivar suitable for container planting or for use as part of a border or bedding.

Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soils and keep in full or partial sun. May require some protection in colder regions during the Winter. A sheltered position is advised in these areas as the plant may suffer some dieback from frosts and drying winds. The foliage will regrow the following Spring.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may, therefore, differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. This plant will be supplied in a grower’s pot.

Instructions

Top Tip

Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and prune back hard in early spring to encourage healthy, vigorous growth. Lavatera thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.

How to Water

Water Lavatera regularly during its first growing season to establish roots, letting the soil dry slightly between waterings. Once established, it tolerates drought well and requires minimal watering.

How to Plant

Plant Lavatera in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, place the plant, and backfill with soil. Space multiple plants at least 90cm apart to allow for their bushy growth. Add compost to the soil for extra nutrients.
