Product description
“Variegatus” or holly olive is a broadleafed evergreen with shiny, dark green leaves. These leaves have spiky teeth and fantastic modern art-like combinations of creamy whites and dark greens mixed together on its leaves, though the white tends towards the fringes.
Sun to partial sun is its preferred location. Although it is tolerant of most soil types. Small and fragrant, tubular flowers appear in the very late summer and autumn throughout the shrub. Although fruiting does occur as small spherical, black berries, the production is usually minimal.
Originating from Japan, this cultivar of Osmanthus is considered more prone to cold or frost damage than related plants. As such, winter protection is encouraged including ground mulch and planting in more sheltered areas. One suggestion, is to plant in a container if it is being used for patio or courtyard purposes.
Other areas where this plant is suggested for use include: along foundation areas, as part of a mixed border planting, a privacy hedge where some sheltering can be provided, for coastal planting and as a part of an informal woodland garden setting.
Garden Plant Size Guide
Plants in larger pots can be multiple years older than their smaller counterparts with more mature root systems and foliage. This makes them able to thrive as a full size plant in your garden quicker than smaller alternatives.
The most common size of pot that garden plants come in are 9cm/1L/3L/5L this is in reference to the diameter at the top of the pot.
9cm potted plants still remain the most popular cost effective option though, they just may take a little patience to allow them to grow into full maturity once planted in your garden.

Top Tip
Prune Osmanthus lightly in spring to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Its fragrant flowers are a bonus in gardens with sheltered conditions.
How to Water
Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, Osmanthus is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
How to Plant
Plant Osmanthus in well-draining soil. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot sheltered from strong winds. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, position the plant, backfill with soil, and firm gently. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
