Product description

Osmunda regalis Purpurascens (Royal Fern) is a tall, deciduous, hardy fern. Fronds first appear as a red-purple colour, mature to a bright green in summer and turn a golden orange in autumn, before dying back. Sometimes named the Flowering Fern, it produces its spores in the form of a brown flower, that appears through the tips of the fronds. This plant would be a wonderful addition to a shady border or bed, woodland area or as part of a water garden on the edge of a stream or pond.

Plant in a moist, acidic soil. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler areas.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may, therefore, differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. This plant will be supplied in a growers pot.

Instructions

Top Tip

Osmunda ferns thrive in shady, moist areas. Add compost or leaf mold annually to enrich the soil and support healthy growth. They make excellent companions for shade-loving perennials.

How to Water

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, mimicking their natural woodland habitat. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, ensuring the soil doesn’t dry out completely. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

How to Plant

Plant Osmunda ferns in a moist, acidic, and well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Choose a shaded to partially shaded location. Dig a hole as deep as the root system, position the plant, and backfill gently. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
