Product description

Rhubarb Ever Red is a reliable cropper with lush green leaves and crimson red stalks. As you’d expect from its name, Ever Red produces edible stalks year-round. However, it really comes into its own in spring and summer when it bears excellent harvests.

This cultivar has a delicious, sweet flavour and is particularly well suited to stewing for crumbles, pies, and other desserts. It is bursting with vitamins A and C and is ideal for making jams. Rhubarb is technically a vegetable, but its sweet taste and the fact it is almost always used to make dessert dishes, means it is usually considered fruit. Note that rhubarb foliage is toxic to humans and pets, so ensure only the stalks are consumed.

Plant Rhubarb Ever Red in well-draining soil in a bright spot where it can soak up the morning sun. You may wish to protect the crops from slugs and snails, for whom rhubarb is also a tasty snack. Allow the plant to establish in the first year and harvest from the second growing season.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Don’t harvest Rhubarb in its first year to allow the plant to establish healthy roots.

How to Water

Water Rhubarb regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Deep watering is best to encourage strong root growth, especially during dry spells. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

How to Plant

Plant Rhubarb in a sunny, well-drained spot with rich, fertile soil. Dig a hole large enough for the roots, leaving the crown slightly above soil level. Space plants 90-120cm apart and firm the soil around them. Water well after planting.
