Product description

Saskatoon Thiesson is a hardy garden shrub valued as much for its aesthetic qualities as its delicious fruit. In spring, masses of small, white, star-shaped flowers cover the plant before making way for large clusters of dark purple berries as summer progresses. In autumn, the mid-green foliage turns fiery shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating plenty of visual interest as the seasons change.

However, the main attraction of Saskatoon Thiesson is its sharp, tangy berries. This cultivar is one of the largest saskatoon berry varieties. It ripens early in the season, and the fruit is ready to harvest from June. Also known as serviceberries or juneberries, saskatoon berries are full of antioxidants are an excellent source of fibre and vitamin C. The berries can be eaten fresh or used to make smoothies, preserves, and dessert fillings.

This attractive garden shrub is relatively easy to look after. Vigorous and reliable, it grows well in partial shade but produces most fruit in full sun. Plant saskatoon in moderately fertile, moist but well-draining soil and keep the surrounding soil free of grasses and weeds. Water regularly during dry spells and prune back old branches annually.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Amelanchier benefits from being pruned after flowering to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth.

How to Water

Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Amelanchier prefers evenly moist conditions, particularly when establishing roots.

How to Plant

Plant Amelanchier in well-draining, slightly acidic soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, place the plant, and cover with soil. Space them 120-150cm apart to allow room for growth.
