Product description

Golden Gourmet Shallots are a great choice for producing a generous yield of home-grown vegetables and are ready to harvest earlier in the season than other varieties. They boast a good flavour and are well-suited for cooking or pickling and can be enjoyed raw in salads. This variety stores incredibly well, meaning you can enjoy fresh shallots for months after harvesting.

Shallots from sets are much quicker and easier to grow than those from seeds and you should see sprouts within 2-3 weeks. Prepare the ground in advance, adding plenty of organic matter for extra nutrients. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and plant the sets 18cm apart, leaving 30cm between rows. Ensure the noses face upwards and position the bulbs 2-5cm deep, lightly covering with soil. Keep the area free of weeds and water regularly during dry spells. Keep an eye open for any flower stems and remove them as soon as they appear. Doing this helps prevent the plant from bolting and ruining the crop.

Shallots are ready to harvest a couple of weeks after the foliage turns yellow. Use a garden fork to gently lift the swollen bulbs and leave them to dry out for around a week. After this they can be stored in an onion bag or hung up in a dark, ventilated place. Stored properly, Red Sun shallots are good to eat for around 8 months post-harvest.
