Product description

Arbutus 'Compacta' Patio Trees are beautiful ornamental tree that produce gorgeous white flowers with hints of pale pink inside which grow in a unique bell-shaped form. These evergreen trees are fairly low maintenance and only require light pruning between November - March and regular watering during the hot months.

Position this tree in colourful borders, mixed containers, patios or small gardens for everyone to see. Plant in moist, well-drained chalky soil in a full sun location to allow the tree to flourish. This species can get bushy so it is recommended to prune back towards the end of Winter / early Spring time to ensure fresh variegated growth for the following season.

Please Note: Images are for illustrative purposes only and designed to be a representation of the item(s) being sold. Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Arbutus trees in late winter or early spring to maintain their natural shape and encourage healthy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches and thin out overcrowded growth to improve air circulation. These trees produce striking red bark as they mature, so occasional light pruning can also enhance their ornamental appeal. Avoid heavy pruning, as Arbutus trees respond best to minimal intervention.

How to Water

Water Arbutus trees deeply after planting and consistently during their first growing season to help establish strong roots. Once established, they are drought-tolerant and require less frequent watering, typically only during prolonged dry spells. Ensure the soil drains well and does not remain waterlogged, as Arbutus roots are sensitive to excessive moisture. Water in the morning to allow the soil to dry out during the day and prevent fungal issues.

How to Plant

To plant an Arbutus tree, choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and no deeper than its height. Position the tree carefully, ensuring the root collar is level with the soil surface, then backfill gently and firm the soil around the base. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the roots and apply a layer of organic mulch, keeping it a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot. Arbutus trees thrive in sheltered positions, so consider protecting them from strong winds.
