Product description
Rhoeo spathacea Discolor, commonly known as the Oyster Plant or Moses-in-the-Cradle, is a houseplant with an exotic look. The vibrant green on top of each leaf is joined by a deep red-purple underside, making the plant very attractive to look at.
The tropical appearance this plant gives off is a standout feature for any indoor home or office space. It is best to place 'Discolor' in a bright space with indirect sun to avoid any fading of the colourful foliage it possesses.
It’s a fast grower and doesn't demand a lot of care and attention. Its compact growth habit ensures that it takes up very little room in and around your home, which also makes this baby plant ideal for small apartments.
Growing your Rhoeo from its baby stage into a mature, healthy plant is all part of the journey that brings joy to all levels of plant enthusiasts up and down the country.
It’s not unusual to give your plant a name… so don’t hesitate to choose one that you think suits the plant! Try naming your plant with the first name or word that you think of when you look at it - that’s how we ended up with an orchid named Clover and spider plant called Joseph.
House Plant Size Guide
House plants come in a wide array of shapes and sizes depending on the variety and maturity of the plant.
6cm/12cm/15cm/19cm/23cm nursery pots are the most common size of pot that they are sold in. This measurement is the diameter at the top of the pot.
12cm potted plants are the most popular providing great value for money and an instant impact. Larger plants that come in pots of 20cm+ are great for making a statement in any room and can represent years of growth to get to that level of maturity and size.

Top Tip
Rhoeo plants thrive in warm, humid environments. To encourage vibrant foliage, wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every four weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth. Trim any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain a neat and attractive appearance.
How to Water
Water your Rhoeo when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, ensuring the pot drains well to avoid soggy roots. In the growing season, keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering during winter when the plant’s growth slows. Use lukewarm water and avoid wetting the leaves excessively to prevent fungal issues.
How to Plant
To plant Rhoeo, choose a container with good drainage and fill it with a well-draining, sandy or loamy potting mix. Position the plant so that its roots are spread evenly, and ensure the crown is slightly above the soil surface. Firm the soil gently around the base and water lightly to settle it in. Place the plant in a bright location with indirect sunlight, avoiding overly shaded or direct sunlit areas.
