Product description

Prunus Padus Bird Cherry, supplied as bare root hedge plants, are deciduous trees with long, broad, spreading branches. Clusters of small, pure white, showy blossoms bloom along the branches throughout spring creating a stunning display. Flowering makes way for dark, glossy berries which are too bitter tasting for people, but they are very popular among wildlife.

These garden plants are perfect as flowering hedge plants for larger gardens because they look particularly good when they are allowed to grow to their full size. This is an excellent tree not only for ornamental value, but for attracting birds and other wildlife to the garden!

Top Tip

Bird cherry is excellent for attracting wildlife into the garden. However, you may wish to provide young plants with protection against deer and rabbits for the first year or two.

How to Water

Water well when planting and regularly for the first year. This may be daily during particularly hot weather in the first growing season. Once established, bird cherry should only need to be watered during long dry spells.

How to Plant

Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant bird cherry in moist but well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench. Allow 30-60cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
