Product description
Prunus spinosa is commonly known as 'Blackthorn' and is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays large clusters of vibrant white flowers in Spring before showing off wonderful bright green foliage in Spring/Summer. Blackthorn has edible sloe berries that are used in the making of sloe gin. If the berries are left alone you will have an aray of wild birds showing interest in clearing out your berries as they provide wild birds with a protective area for nesting as well as feeding. This can also act as a great deterrent for intruders as the thorns that protrude from this spiny hedge will not let anyone through unharmed.
Prunus spinosa will do fine in any type of soil. Blackthorn grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size of 1m high if required.

Top Tip
Harvest blackthorn’s sloe berries from October when they feel soft and have taken on a purple-black hue. Use them to make sloe gin, jams and jellies, or to flavour drinks such as vodka and port.
How to Water
Water well when planting and regularly for the first year, especially during hot weather. Once established, blackthorn should only need to be watered during particularly dry spells.
How to Plant
Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant blackthorn in moist but well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench. Allow 30-45cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
