Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Callistemon after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage more blooms for the next season. Avoid cutting into old wood, as this can prevent regrowth. For optimal growth, feed annually with a fertiliser designed for acid-loving plants in spring. In colder climates, plant in a sheltered spot or against a sunny wall to protect it from frost and extend its flowering season.

How to Water

Water Callistemon regularly during its first year to help establish a strong root system, particularly in warm or dry conditions. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant, but it benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Ensure the soil drains freely to avoid waterlogging, as Callistemon dislikes soggy roots. Early morning or evening watering is best to minimise evaporation and ensure hydration during warmer days.

How to Plant

To plant Callistemon, select a sunny spot with well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball, and soak the root ball thoroughly before planting. Position the plant so the root collar is level with the soil surface, then backfill with a mixture of soil and compost. Firm the soil gently around the base and water deeply to settle. Mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but leave a gap around the trunk to prevent rot.
