Product description

Sometimes known as Onion Grass, Chives are excellent culinary plants for kitchen gardening. Long, slender, hollow leaves grow in upright clumps and are topped with rounded pop-poms of mauve-purple bell-shaped flowers in summer. These blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, attracting pollinators into the garden.

Chives are an excellent source of vitamin A, producing more than any other member of the allium family. They are also a great source of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins K and C, while being low in calories. Their subtle favour makes an excellent addition to salads, sandwiches, wraps, dips, seafood dishes, eggs, and potatoes.

Grow Chives in pots on a light windowsill for ease of fresh harvesting as you cook. Alternatively, plant outdoors for a larger crop. Chives are somewhat unfussy about their growing conditions, doing well in full sun or partial shade in most moist but well-draining soil types.

Sow under cover from March to April or outdoors from April to May. Alternatively, sow all year round on a sunny windowsill. Plant seedlings out from April to May, once the risk of frost has passed. Allow 20cm between plants. Harvest throughout the year, from June onwards.
