Product description
Sambucus nigra, or Common Elder, is a bushy deciduous shrub or small tree. This native fast-growing elder is perfect for creating ornamental hedgerows with its finely-cut pinnate leaves that are almost black but turn yellow in autumn. It produces fragrant flat sprays of cream-coloured flowers in early summer followed by small, black, edible berries in autumn.
For best results plant the Elder shrub in moist but well drained soil. It can grow in pretty much all soil types and will even tolerate waterlogged, chalky soils. It prefers sunny locations or partial shade. I will tolerate hard pruning well to keep their size.

Top Tip
Add a thick layer of mulch annually in spring to retain moisture and provide a boost of nutrients.
How to Water
Water Sambucus regularly, especially during dry spells. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, ensuring good drainage to prevent root rot. Once established, it is somewhat drought-tolerant.
How to Plant
Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant elder in well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 30-60cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
