Product description
Cornus 'Gloria Birkett' is a species of Flowering Dogwood well known for their ease of care and low maintenance. The foliage appears a mid-green when young, later turning to red and purple as Autumn approaches. Tiny green flowers appear in a tight cluster and are surrounded by large white bracts that, just like the foliage, gain a shade of pink and then red as they age and later give way to small, berries in the Autumn.
A low maintenance, easy to grow tree. Plant in moist, well-drained soil and keep in full or partial sun. The foliage is susceptible to leaf scorch under full sun during the warm Summer months in some climates.

Top Tip
Prune Cornus annually in late winter or early spring to encourage vibrant new growth and maintain a striking shape. For the most colourful stems, cut back one-third of the oldest growth each year to ground level. A slow-release fertiliser applied in early spring can promote healthy growth and enhance the vivid colours of the stems and foliage.
How to Water
Water Cornus deeply during its first year to encourage a strong root system, particularly during dry spells. Once established, these trees are relatively low-maintenance, requiring watering only in prolonged dry conditions. Ensure the soil remains moist but well-drained to prevent waterlogging, which can harm the roots. Morning or evening watering is best to minimise evaporation and ensure the plant absorbs the maximum amount of water.
How to Plant
To plant Cornus, choose a sunny or partially shaded position with well-draining soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, ensuring the roots can spread comfortably. Position the plant so the root ball is level with the ground, then backfill with soil and firm gently. Water thoroughly after planting to help it establish. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring it does not touch the trunk.
