Product description

Euonymus Harlequin - also known as spindle tree - grows well in pots and containers and is perfect for brightening up patios, driveways and terraces, as well as flanking entrances. The timeless lollipop stem shape allows the foliage to shine, creating an attractive focal point.

Euonymus is often grown as evergreen shrubs in a garden border. However, trained into a patio tree shape, it makes an excellent addition to any garden. Patio trees provide height and structure to an outdoor space, enhancing garden design and decorating areas of paving or decking.

This Harlequin cultivar features a tall single stem trunk with a mound of foliage at the top. The leathery oval-to-oblong leaves are in variegated shades of green and cream, and flushed pink in autumn and winter.

This is a hardy patio tree, however, you may wish to provide additional insulation around the plant pot to protect the roots against winter frost damage. Euonymus Harlequin thrives in moist, well-draining soil and is happy in most soil types. Like all plants, pot-grown specimens do need to be watered more frequently. Position the tree in partial shade or full sun to bring out the colour of the leaves.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Euonymus in late spring or summer to maintain its shape and encourage compact growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote airflow and reduce the risk of disease. For variegated varieties, trim any green shoots that revert to maintain the plant’s decorative appearance. With minimal effort, Euonymus can be a versatile and elegant feature in gardens, borders, or hedging.

How to Water

Water Euonymus deeply after planting to help establish strong roots. During the first growing season, water regularly, especially in dry or warm weather. Once established, Euonymus is relatively drought-tolerant and requires only occasional watering, typically during prolonged dry spells. Be cautious of overwatering, as it thrives in well-drained soil. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and keep the roots hydrated.

How to Plant

To plant Euonymus, select a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining soil that can be neutral to slightly alkaline. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Soak the root ball in water prior to planting, then position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface. Backfill the hole, firm the soil gently, and water thoroughly. Apply a layer of mulch to retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay, ensuring it does not touch the base of the plant.
