Product description
Corylus avellana is commonly known as 'Hazel' it is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays vibrant large bright green foliage in Spring before showing off wonderful golden leaves in Autumn. Hazel has long golden yellow catkins that appear in January through to march and they are commonly known as lambs tails. Corylus can produce edible nuts and if these are required then you will need to retain some or most of the catkins to produce these nuts. The nuts fully ripen in autumn and are a perfect snack for squirrels. Corylus avellana supports over 70 species of insects as well as the dormouse (dormice), moths and squirrels.
Corylus avellana will do fine in any type of soil. Hazel grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size of 1m high if required.

Top Tip
Lightly prune hazel hedges annually in late winter to early spring, before new growth starts to emerge.
How to Water
Water well when planting and regularly for the first 2 years, especially during hot weather. Once established, hazel hedges should only need to be watered during particularly dry spells.
How to Plant
Choose a sheltered spot in full sun or partial shade and plant hazel in moist, well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 45-60cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
