Product description

Ligustrum Delavayanum are a compact, evergreen shrub with features such as the leaves of dark green colour and the blue-black berries. The white flowers that appear in the Summer give it a nice, unique look and offset the tree from its other darker features at that time of year. Ligustrum Delavayanum will take kindly to full sun, making it the perfect tree for a small garden, patio or along a garden path where visitors walk.

This ornamental tree has lovely flowers with elegantly small leaves. It will be an attractive piece and be a pleasure to take care of and own. The toxicity of this tree is a feature you must take extra care with. All parts may cause severe discomfort, if ingested. Please be careful in this sense and make sure that the tree is kept in an environment where this would not be an issue.

Please Note: Images are for illustrative purposes only and designed to be a representation of the item(s) being sold. Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Ligustrum annually in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage healthy, dense growth. Regular trimming also helps control its size and promotes a tidy appearance. If planting as a hedge, trim more frequently during the growing season to maintain its structure. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring for vibrant foliage and robust health.

How to Water

Water Ligustrum deeply and regularly during its first year to help the roots establish, especially in periods of dry weather. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires only occasional watering, particularly in prolonged heat. Avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.

How to Plant

To plant Ligustrum, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than its height. Position the tree so that the root collar sits level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and prevent weed growth, keeping it a few centimetres away from the trunk to avoid rot.
