Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Liriodendron trees in late winter or early spring to shape their structure and remove any damaged or crossing branches. These trees thrive in nutrient-rich soil, so consider applying a balanced fertiliser in early spring for vigorous growth. To showcase their stunning flowers, ensure the tree has access to full sun and adequate space to grow, as mature specimens can become quite large.

How to Water

Water your Liriodendron deeply after planting to help the roots establish. During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, these trees are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from watering during extended dry spells. Apply water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and avoid wetting the leaves, which can encourage disease.

How to Plant

To plant a Liriodendron, select a sunny or lightly shaded location with well-draining, fertile soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep, ensuring the tree is planted at the same depth as it was in its container. Backfill the hole with soil, firming it gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly. Add a layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk.
