Product description
Sorbus aucuparia is commonly known as 'Mountain Ash Rowan' and is an extremely popular tree that displays vibrant dark green foliage with creamy white flowers in Summer. Once the flowers fall this plant produces an abundance of colourful bright red berries with beautiful bright red winter foliage. These berries produce excellent winter feeding for wildlife and wild birds.
Sorbus aucuparia will do fine in any type of soil and can be planted inland or in coastal areas. Mountain Ash Rowan grows at around 1-2 feet per year and can reach up to 15m+ in its lifetime.

Top Tip
Prune Sorbus in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches and to maintain a healthy shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce flowering and berry production. Encourage wildlife to your garden by leaving the berries to ripen fully—they are a favourite for birds and add vibrant colour to your outdoor space during autumn.
How to Water
Water Sorbus deeply after planting and continue to water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots. During dry spells, ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Sorbus plants are relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and provide the tree with the moisture it needs.
How to Plant
Plant Sorbus in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 20-45cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
