Top Tip
Prune ornamental trees during their dormant season to maintain a strong structure and promote healthy growth. Remove any damaged, dead, or crossing branches to encourage an open canopy that allows air and light to pass through. Add a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vibrant foliage and flowering, and stake young trees for the first year to prevent wind damage while they establish themselves.
How to Water
Water ornamental trees deeply after planting and regularly during their first year, especially during dry periods, to establish a strong root system. Once established, water as needed during prolonged dry spells. Avoid shallow, frequent watering as this can encourage surface rooting. Focus on watering early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and ensure the water penetrates deeply into the soil.
How to Plant
To plant ornamental trees, choose a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and deep enough so the tree’s root collar sits just above ground level. Loosen the soil at the base of the hole and add organic matter, such as compost, to improve drainage and fertility. Position the tree carefully, backfill with soil, and gently firm down to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a mulch layer around the base, keeping it a few centimetres away from the trunk to avoid rot.
