Top Tip
Deadhead faded blooms regularly to prolong flowering and encourage the plant to produce vibrant new flowers throughout the season. Apply a balanced fertiliser during the growing season to support lush growth and abundant blooms. For colder regions, consider covering Osteospermum with frost protection fabric or moving potted specimens to a sheltered spot during winter to ensure its longevity.
How to Water
Water Osteospermum deeply after planting and maintain regular watering during its first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, these plants are drought-tolerant and require only occasional watering, particularly during extended dry periods. Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings, as Osteospermum prefers well-drained conditions. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot, and water in the early morning or late evening to minimise evaporation.
How to Plant
To plant Osteospermum, select a sunny location with well-draining, light soil, such as sandy or loamy types, and a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Prepare the ground by loosening the soil and mixing in organic matter for improved drainage. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, position the plant with its crown at ground level, and backfill with soil, firming it gently. Water thoroughly after planting and add a light layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture, keeping the mulch clear of the stem.
