Product description

Phormium Maori Queen is a wonderful evergreen perennial shrub, grown for its ornamental glossy foliage in garden borders. It is native to New Zealand from the tropical coastal areas. One can grow it perfectly inland in formal gardens or in seaside gardens. Maori Queen boasts beautiful sword-like leaves with variegated colours that are attractive and decorative.

Maori Queen forms an upright clump forming bush, with long arching leaves from the base of the shrub. These leaves are olive green in centre with thin rose-red edges that fade to cream. When the plant matures, small red flower spikes appear during summer. These flowers carry rich nectar for hummingbirds. Use Maori Queen as decorative border shrubs or low hedges.

Plant them in a well-drained soil in a partial shade spot. Too much moisture can cause the roots of the plant to rot, therefore it is necessary to avoid clogging of water. Use a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and to suppress weeds. Once established, they will be able to cope up with dry conditions and cold hardy climate.

In winters, protect them from hard frost by placing them indoors. These are easy to grow, low maintenance plants that can be grown as houseplants. They will not demand any pruning, simply remove any leaves that are damaged in spring.

Their glossy foliage will provide the necessary backdrop for other colourful plants. Use them in mixed borders with other flowering shrubs. Set your patio on a decorative and stylish display with Maori Queen in containers. Phormium Maori Maiden is excellent coastal gardens, rockeries or formal gardens.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Phormium's dead or damaged leaves regularly to maintain a neat appearance and encourage healthy new growth.

How to Water

Water Phormium regularly, especially in dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. Ensure the soil remains moist but well-drained. Once established, Phormium is drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering.

How to Plant

Plant Phormium in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball, place the plant in the hole, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
