Product description
Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is commonly known as 'Purple Barberry' and is an extremely popular hedge that displays vibrant deep purple foliage in spring along with red/yellow flowers. In autumn the leaves change from deep purple to a fiery red before falling off as this is a deciduous shrub. You also get rich red fruits in winter as this hedge is a great feeding source for all birds and wildlife. This hedge is excellent for birds to nest in due to the protective thorns that will also keep inturders at bay.
Purple Barberry will do fine in any type of soil and can be planted inland and coastal areas. Berberis grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size.

Top Tip
Berbaris plants are covered in spines, so always protect yourself with gloves and long sleeves when tending them.
How to Water
Water generously and regularly for the first growing season. After this, berbaris is relatively drought tolerant and only needs to be watered during particularly dry spells.
How to Plant
Plant barberry in a sunny or partially shaded spot with moist, well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 30-90cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
