Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Rhamnus trees in late winter or early spring to maintain their shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. This helps improve air circulation and encourages new growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy foliage and fruit production. Rhamnus trees are versatile and can thrive in various settings, making them a great addition to both formal and informal gardens.

How to Water

Water Rhamnus trees deeply after planting and continue watering regularly during their first year to help establish strong roots. Mature trees are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Always check the soil before watering, ensuring it is dry to the touch to prevent waterlogging. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and encourage healthy growth.

How to Plant

To plant a Rhamnus tree, select a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining, fertile soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth. Gently tease out the roots before placing the tree in the hole, ensuring the root collar sits at soil level. Backfill with soil, firming it gently, and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Add a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it away from the trunk to avoid rot.
