Top Tip
Deadhead spent flowers after blooming to direct the plant’s energy into producing new growth rather than seed. Avoid pruning heavily into old wood as Rhododendrons may struggle to recover. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring to encourage vibrant blooms and healthy foliage. These stunning trees thrive best with protection from harsh winds and direct, hot sunlight, making them ideal for woodland-style gardens or sheltered borders.
How to Water
Water Rhododendrons deeply after planting, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season, provide additional water during dry spells, particularly in summer. Established plants prefer regular watering to maintain health but do not tolerate standing water. Always water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease. Use rainwater whenever possible to maintain the soil's acidity.
How to Plant
To plant Rhododendrons, select a partially shaded spot with well-draining, acidic soil. Prepare the area by loosening the soil and incorporating organic matter such as leaf mould or compost. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, then place the plant so that the top of the root ball sits slightly above ground level. Backfill gently, firming the soil, and water thoroughly. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the shallow roots, keeping the mulch clear of the stem.
