Top Tip
Prune Robinia trees during the winter months to remove dead or damaged branches and encourage a healthy shape. Focus on thinning out overcrowded growth to improve air circulation, which reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Protect young trees from strong winds and frost with a tree guard or by planting in a sheltered spot. Robinia trees are excellent for creating light shade in gardens and their delicate foliage adds a soft, ornamental touch to outdoor spaces.
How to Water
Water Robinia trees deeply during their first year to establish strong roots, particularly in prolonged dry periods. Once established, they are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering, thriving on natural rainfall. Avoid overwatering, as they prefer slightly dry soil conditions. During hot weather, water early in the morning or evening to minimise evaporation. Regularly check the soil around the tree’s base to ensure it is moist but not waterlogged.
How to Plant
To plant Robinia, choose a sunny location with well-draining, moderately fertile soil, as they thrive in a range of soil types but prefer neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly deeper than its depth. Position the tree with its roots spread naturally, backfill the hole, and firm the soil gently. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring the mulch does not touch the trunk.
