Top Tip
Remove any dead or dying rosettes, known as offsets, to encourage fresh growth and prevent disease. Sempervivum thrives in rockeries, gravel gardens, or containers, where its striking rosettes can create visual interest. For an attractive display, combine multiple varieties with different colours and textures in the same container. These hardy plants require minimal care, making them perfect for low-maintenance gardening.
How to Water
Water Sempervivum sparingly, as it is highly drought-tolerant and stores moisture in its fleshy leaves. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially when grown in pots. During prolonged dry spells in summer, a light watering is beneficial, but avoid waterlogging as it can cause root rot. In winter, reduce watering significantly, allowing the plant to remain relatively dry.
How to Plant
To plant Sempervivum, choose a sunny spot with well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil to mimic its natural habitat. Gently remove the plant from its container, ensuring not to damage the rosettes. Dig a shallow hole wide enough to accommodate the roots, keeping the rosette level with the soil surface. Firm the soil around the base and water lightly to settle it. Sempervivum can also be planted in pots with a gritty compost mix, ensuring excellent drainage.
