Product description

Betula Pendula Silver Birch are outdoor garden shrubs or medium sized trees which can also be grown as garden hedging. These trees have attractive, white, papery bark and pendulous branches upon which delicate, glossy green leaves grow. In autumn, foliage turns to rustic yellow before dying off over winter and returning again in spring.

In spring, foliage is accompanied by yellow green, drooping catkins, sometimes making way for small, cone-like fruits which are not edible. Although these trees can reach an ultimate height of around 30 metres, they can be pruned to remain smaller when used as hedging, where they will grow in an elegant, rounded habit.

This shrub will tolerate many soil types as long as they are moist and well-drained, and it will grow best in full sun or partial shade. Prune in the dormant season each year and avoid pruning in spring.

Instructions

Top Tip

Apply a thick layer of mulch in spring or autumn to help retain moisture and give the soil a boost of nutrients.

How to Water

Water well when planting and regularly for the first year, especially during hot weather. Once established, birch hedges should only need to be watered during particularly dry spells.

How to Plant

Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant birch in moist, well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 30-40cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
