Product description

Vriesea Era is a stunning houseplant that is full of pattern and vibrant colour. The evergreen, arching foliage bears a striped maroon and green pattern. This is accompanied by a central, spear-like flowerhead that shows off an eye-catching luminous orange colour when it blooms from Spring through to Autumn. This plant, more commonly known as Flaming Sword, is also a great space-filler as it grows to an ultimate height and spread of 0.6m.

Vrieseas are easy to care for. They will appreciate any area that offers bright, indirect light. Being tolerant to moist soil types makes any repotting process simple. Water the plant so its soil is kept moist and well-drained, whilst also ensuring the leaves are misted regularly.

Instructions

Top Tip

For a healthy Vriesea, mist the leaves regularly to mimic its natural humid environment, especially in dry indoor conditions. If the plant produces pups (offsets) after flowering, allow them to grow to a third of the mother plant’s size before carefully separating and replanting. This propagation method ensures you can enjoy new plants while maintaining the original’s beauty.

How to Water

Water your Vriesea by keeping its central cup filled with fresh, non-chlorinated water, such as rainwater or distilled water. Empty and refill the cup weekly to prevent stagnation and maintain hygiene. Keep the surrounding soil lightly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly during winter months when the plant’s growth slows. Always ensure the pot drains thoroughly to avoid root rot.

How to Plant

To plant a Vriesea, use a well-draining orchid or bromeliad compost mix, ensuring the pot has adequate drainage holes. Position the plant so its base sits just above the soil, and press the compost gently around the roots. Place the pot in a bright location with indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves. Ensure the central cup, or rosette, is always filled with water to support the plant’s unique hydration needs. Avoid fertilisers during the initial planting phase to prevent stress on the plant.
