Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Abutilon trees in early spring to shape them and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and lightly trim to control size. For best flowering results, feed with a high-potash fertiliser during the growing season and ensure they’re protected from frost with a mulch layer or temporary cover during cold spells.

How to Water

Water your Abutilon tree deeply after planting and maintain regular watering during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Mature trees prefer consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of dryness. Water at the base of the plant, avoiding the leaves, and ensure the soil is moist but not soggy. Reduce watering in cooler months, but do not let the soil completely dry out.

How to Plant

To plant an Abutilon tree, select a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and deep enough to keep the tree at the same level as in its container. Soak the root ball before planting, then position the tree and backfill with soil, firming it down gently. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring it doesn’t touch the trunk.
