Product description
Nephrolepis Exaltata, also known as the Sword Fern ‘Fluffy Ruffles’ is a beautifully dense, compact and clump-forming evergreen dwarf fern. Its broadly triangular green fronds with a lacy disposition will remain year-round.
The Sword Fern’s native form, the Boston fern, is an extremely popular houseplant that’s been kept as a green indoor friend since the Victorian era.
This dwarf variety is an excellent choice for a fern that is smaller in stature, and would be perfect in a terrarium. Nephrolepis ‘Fluffy Ruffle’ is a humidity lover and will appreciate regular, even moisture - their drought tolerance is minimal, so watch out. This classic house plant will not require much else aside from a fertile, moist and well-drained compost mix and placement in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight or dappled shade.
Growing your Nephrolepis from its baby stage into a mature, healthy plant is all part of the journey that brings joy to all levels of plant enthusiasts up and down the country.
It’s not unusual to give your plant a name… so don’t hesitate to choose one that you think suits the plant! Try naming your plant with the first name or word that you think of when you look at it - that’s how we ended up with an orchid named Clover and spider plant called Joseph.
House Plant Size Guide
House plants come in a wide array of shapes and sizes depending on the variety and maturity of the plant.
6cm/12cm/15cm/19cm/23cm nursery pots are the most common size of pot that they are sold in. This measurement is the diameter at the top of the pot.
12cm potted plants are the most popular providing great value for money and an instant impact. Larger plants that come in pots of 20cm+ are great for making a statement in any room and can represent years of growth to get to that level of maturity and size.

Top Tip
Nephrolepis thrives in high humidity, making it ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. If placed in a drier room, mist its fronds daily or use a pebble tray with water to maintain the necessary humidity. Trim away any browned or withered fronds regularly to keep the plant healthy and encourage fresh growth. With the right care, this fern will create a lush, vibrant display in your home.
How to Water
Water Nephrolepis regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season, water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels dry, adjusting frequency based on the environment. Reduce watering slightly in winter but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. Use filtered or rainwater to prevent mineral build-up, which can damage the fern’s sensitive roots.
How to Plant
To plant Nephrolepis, use a pot with good drainage and fill it with a light, well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter. Remove the fern carefully from its container, taking care not to damage the delicate roots, and position it so the crown is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly. Place the pot in a spot with bright, indirect light and ensure it is shielded from direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
