Product description

Rex Begonias, commonly known as King Begonia, are best known for their striking foliage. This Etna variety has a clustered leaf formation that ensures the black and red colouring stands out from all angles. Both colours feature sporadically throughout each leaf, with not one llead featuring just the one colour. This gives this Rex Begonia a eye-catching aspect, with the bold and powerful colours at the forefront of that. King Begonia will use its air-purifying qualities to ensure that the removal of harmful pollutants and unwanted toxins is done efficiently so the living area is fresh and revitalised. The plant will prefer placement in partial shade, with very minimal contact to direct sunlight. Watering the plant when the soil is dry to touch is required, meaning once a week will suffice throughout the year. Until Winter when, due to it being the plants dormant period, you should lower this amount to once every two weeks.

Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

To keep Begonias looking vibrant, deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Prune any leggy growth to maintain a compact shape and promote healthy new shoots. During the winter, reduce watering and bring container-grown plants indoors if temperatures drop below 10°C, as Begonias are sensitive to frost.

How to Water

Begonias prefer consistent moisture but should not sit in soggy soil. Water the plant when the top 2 cm of soil feels dry, ensuring water drains freely to avoid waterlogging. During hot weather or active growth, check the soil more frequently and increase watering slightly. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues on the leaves, and instead water directly at the soil level in the morning for better absorption.

How to Plant

o plant Begonias, choose a partially shaded spot with well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. If growing in containers, use a high-quality potting mix with good aeration. Plant Begonia tubers with the concave side facing up, covering them lightly with soil. Space the plants 20–30 cm apart for optimal growth and airflow. After planting, water thoroughly to settle the soil, and consider adding mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
