Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Bougainvillea in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage vibrant blooms. Remove dead or overcrowded stems to improve air circulation and sunlight access. Fertilise with a balanced feed during the growing season to support flowering and healthy growth. If growing in cooler climates, protect the plant from frost with mulch or fleece, or consider planting in a container for easier relocation.

How to Water

Water Bougainvillea deeply immediately after planting to encourage root establishment. In the first year, water regularly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between watering sessions. Mature plants are drought-tolerant and require infrequent watering, with care taken to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. For best results, water early in the morning or evening to minimise evaporation and ensure the soil retains moisture.

How to Plant

To plant Bougainvillea, select a sunny location with well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Dig a hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball, ensuring the crown sits level with the soil surface. Soak the root ball before placing it in the hole. Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to remove air pockets. Add a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, leaving space around the trunk to prevent rot. If planting near a structure, provide support such as a trellis or wall for climbing growth.
