Top Tip
Feed your Camellia in early spring and midsummer with a fertiliser specifically designed for acid-loving plants to support healthy growth and flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and keep the plant looking tidy. If frost is expected, protect young plants with a fleece cover or move potted specimens to a sheltered spot, as Camellias can be sensitive to extreme cold.
How to Water
Water Camellias consistently during the first year to help them establish strong roots, especially during dry periods. Once established, they prefer moist but well-drained soil, so water deeply when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and try to use rainwater where possible, as Camellias are sensitive to the lime content in tap water. Watering in the early morning or evening reduces evaporation and keeps the plant hydrated.
How to Plant
To plant Camellias, choose a partially shaded spot with well-draining, acidic soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Soak the root ball thoroughly before planting, and backfill with a mix of soil and ericaceous compost. Firm the soil gently and water well to settle it. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and prevent weeds, but avoid piling it against the trunk.
