Product description

Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue' is a lovely evergreen Californian Lilac that profusely blooms gorgeous clusters of sky-blue flowers in early spring. It is a frost hardy, bushy flowering shrub with a good upright habit and can effortlessly be trained against a wall or fence as hedging.

This Californian Lilac blooms blue flowers with such passion that it creates an astonishing floral display suitable for most garden landscapes. Its twiggy spreading branches carry glossy ovate green leaves that grow dense and are evergreen.

Planting one of these Californian Autumnal Blue will ensure your garden is keenly visited by bees and butterflies until mid-autumn since flowers often bloom again. Train these shrubs against a sunny wall in a fertile and moist soil. They will not tolerate wet roots, plant only in a well-drained spot.

Prune them back until the new buds after the flowering season. The flowers bloom on old wood, make sure not to prune too hard. Once they establish their root system, they will grow into tough hardy plants and will not demand much care.

Californian Lilac plants are most suitable for coastal garden as they are tolerant to coastal winds. Ideally, one can plant them as ground cover on dry banks or flower borders in outdoor gardens.

Instructions

Top Tip

Provide a support to train the plant for more structured, formal appearance.

How to Water

Water regularly during the first few growing seasons. After this, ceanothus is drought tolerant and only needs to be watered during particularly dry spells. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

How to Plant

Choose a sheltered spot out of strong winds and plant ceanothus in full sun in well-draining soil. Dig a hole around twice as wide as the root ball and position the plant so the top of the root ball is at soil level. Backfill with soil and compost, gently firm down, and water in well.
